Ireland’s Commitment to Food and Nutrition Security: An analysis of the Irish Government’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) over the past two decades to address global hunger and malnutrition.

The Best Ireland Can Be for Food and Nutrition Security report reviews Ireland’s contribution to global food and nutrition security through its ODA. Drawing on publicly available data and extensive consultation, the paper takes stock of Ireland’s role over the past two decades, highlighting strong leadership on nutrition, particularly in fragile and conflict‑affected contexts.

The report shows that Ireland performs well compared to other donors in prioritising nutrition within its aid programme. However, it also identifies gaps and risks, including declining investment in agriculture and WASH, and the impact of Ireland not yet meeting its long‑standing commitment to allocate 0.7% of GNI to ODA.

Looking ahead, the report sets out clear opportunities for Ireland to strengthen its impact by sustaining nutrition investments, supporting integrated food systems approaches, and increasing overall ODA to match its ambitions and commitments.
