Pakistan health ministry opens healthy food kiosk in Islamabad

Pakistan’s federal health minister, Syed Mustafa Kamal, has inaugurated a Lifestyle Medicine Health Kiosk at the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination in Islamabad, according to an Associated Press of Pakistan report. The kiosk will offer foods made without white sugar or other processed ingredients, focusing instead on whole grains, wheat-based products and organic ingredients.
The Culinary Arts Department at Riphah International University sponsored the initiative in partnership with the ministry and the Pakistan Association of Lifestyle Medicine. Organizers said the kiosk is intended to encourage better eating habits and reduce risk factors associated with noncommunicable diseases, including obesity and high blood pressure.
Kamal called for the concept to be introduced at other federal ministries and public-sector institutions. Dr. Zafar Mirza, president of the Pakistan Association of Lifestyle Medicine, also urged the ministry to stop serving unhealthy baked goods and ultra-processed foods at official meetings. He said the long-term goal is to establish healthy food kiosks throughout government workplaces.
